Riverwood Elementary School PTA
Ram’s Report  October 2014

Message from the President

Welcome to another year at Riverwood Elementary School! As the new president of the school’s PTA, I want to welcome you and encourage you to join the PTA. The PTA is comprised of committees that work to support the school through fundraising opportunities and class/school events, such as teacher’s brunches, talent show, food drives and holiday shoppe. Last year, the RES PTA was able to purchase six new smart boards, installed a shade structure, made playground enhancements and installed the beautiful outdoor courtyard for use by RES students, staff and parents. This school year our fundraising efforts will be focused on raising money for technology to include smart boards and updating the computers and monitors in the computer lab. The RES PTA will also be applying for a grant for the installation of another shade structure.

I would also like to invite you to volunteer your time with the PTA. Whether it is holding a board position or volunteering a few hours a month to a committee, no time is too little. Many people are needed to make these fundraisers a success. Please consider spending an hour or two a month helping to make your PTA successful. Thank you for all you have already done this year. I hope to see you Oct. 23 at Fall Family Fun Night and Spaghetti Dinner.

Fundraising Efforts

Show Your Ram Pride!

How does the RES PTA raise the money used for new technology equipment, playground equipment and school beautification projects? You guessed it: fundraising!

This year the major fundraisers will be the Fall Family Fun Night and Spaghetti Dinner on Oct. 23 and Boosterthon on April 1. As in the past, the PTA is hoping that Spirit Wear sales and the Holiday Shoppe also will help boost our fundraising efforts and put the PTA closer to its fundraising goal of $35,000.

Donations are always needed. The RES PTA’s Donations Committee has worked with area business and colleges to obtain a large number raffle items for Family Fun Night. Donations are also used for teacher brunches throughout the year and Teacher Appreciation Week.If you own a business and would like to help out by donating an item or your services, please contact Melissa Blackmon at

All spirit wear orders have been delivered. If you placed an order but have not received it yet, please send an email to If you would like to purchase spirit wear (short sleeve shirts only), there are still a few available, email Amanda Patton (

It’s Looking More “Green” Around the School

The first phase of the courtyard landscaping has been completed! The Beautification Committee also planted Montauk daisies and camellias in the front of the school that used to be in the front planters. The second phase will include planting bulbs, purchasing decorative terra cotta or ceramic planters for the courtyard, planting another Japanese maple (mid-size species) to provide shade for the courtyard in the future and potentially putting in some cold weather annuals for some color, e.g. pansies.

Help RES Through Rewards Programs

Much has been in the news recently regarding the EV-D68 enterovirus, causing many parents to be concerned for well-being of their children. Enteroviruses are very common, with over 100 known types. Although this virus may be more serious in children with chronic respiratory illnesses or asthma, more than 10 million enterovirus infections occur in the United States each year. Enteroviruses, including the EV-D68 virus, can be transmitted from person to person when an infected person coughs, sneezes or touches a contaminated surface.

Parents and schools can take the precautions below to prevent the spread of this illness.

  • Wash hands with soap and water for 20 seconds.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze. Teach children to cough or sneeze into their sleeve rather than into their hands.
  • Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Disinfect contaminated surfaces.
  • If you are sick, stay home to prevent others from getting sick.

For more information regarding the EV-D68, visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s website:

The Box Tops program is off to a good start! Mrs. Ritchie’s first grade class submitted the most Box Tops in September and earned the title of “Box Tops Champs.” Congratulations! The first graders overall have submitted the most Box Tops so far and are in the lead in the “Race to the Finish” contest to earn an ice cream party at the end of the school year. Don’t worry! The other grades are close on their heels!

Food Lion decided to end their “Classroom Rewards” program in the fall. Therefore, the points the PTA had in its account had to be redeemed by Sept. 1. The PTA used the points to purchase a new die cut machine (to be shared with the RES staff), balls, hula hoops and jump ropes for all three playgrounds and school supplies for the Silent Partners program.

If you haven’t already done so, please link your Harris Teeter VIC card to Riverwood Elementary School. It’s as easy as telling the cashier at checkout that you want to link it to RES. VIC cards must be re-linked to RES every school year starting on Aug. 1 so that the RES PTA to earn money to support the school.
